Sometimes its just nice not to have to drive anywhere, but to walk from where you’re staying. One of the special features of Merlestead is having immediate access from the rear garden onto an adjacent footpath.

From Merlestead you can access a good selection of local walks, literally from the ‘doorstep’ (rear garden gate), of varying degrees of difficulty and length. A short selection of some of our favourites are detailed below and highlighted on the adjacent map, each route colour corresponds to the walk description below.

Walk1: LATRIGG

A walk from the doorstep that takes you around the Latrigg, a total of 5.3 miles. If you want to venture to the top of Latrigg which has spectacular views you can either do this as a detor or just shorten the route by walking up via Mallen Dodd and returning via the Woodland path through Whinney Brow. The shorter walk is only 3.5 miles long.

Walk 2: KESWICK & MALLEN DODD

Another walk from the doorstep on footpaths down through the village, across fields and roads to the delights of Keswick, and back on a section of the Cumbrian Way up towards Latrigg and home along the Woodland path past Underscar Manor. 4.6 miles.

Walk 3: AROUND APPLETHWAITE

A short walk from the garden up the valley behind, across the stream and onto the fell which offers very rewarding views for remarkably little effort. Return home via the old Terrace road. 1.5 miles.

Walk 4: SKIDDAW

The Circular walk up Skiddaw on well-used paths. Start from the doorstep or get a lift to the Latrigg car park at the top of the road. You can include an ascent of Skiddaw Little Man on the way to the main summit. The return is on quite steep paths down Carl Side to Millbeck. Pick a day when the forecast is good and you can see the summit of Skiddaw Little Man is clear (visible from the garden), and enjoy 360 degrees of amazing views. 6.9 miles.

Walk 5: LONSCALE & BLEASDALE FELL

A not too strenuous walk on good paths around outlying fells of Skiddaw, and Blencathra. The return is from the Blencathra centre, across the valley and along the side of Latrigg. This walk is best started and finished from the Latrigg car park at the top of the road. 6.3 miles.
